Software Freedom Day

Next meeting postponed to SFD, and there's t-shirts!

The next meeting of the computer club has been postponed to Saturday the 20th, in order to roll it into the Software Freedom Day festivities. See the details on the ClubLinux website.

I'll be putting in an order for some Software Freedom Day 2008 t-shirts, so if you'd like to save on freight, let me know within the next day or so if you want any, and I'll add your order to mine. They're priced at 15 North American Pesos, which works out to roughly $AU20 (and rapidly falling).

The shirts are available in S, M, L, XL, XXL, and IT professional (XXXL) sizes, and you can see the design here, and the finished article here.

Coffs Coast Software Freedom Day Celebrations - Sept 15 2007

Hello Everyone,

Well, Software Freedom Day in 2007 is on Saturday 15th September and once again Coffs will have a team organising the celebrations - psssttt...this year the venue is the Park Beach Bowling Club.

SFD 2006 Slides

Finally got the slides from a few of the SFD 2006 presentations online:

In addition you can find the script for running multiple versions of MS Internet Explorer on GNU/Linux, as demonstrated by David, here: http://www.tatanka.com.br/ies4linux/page/Main_Page. I can say from personal experience that if you do web development this is a real time and sanity saver.

SFD 2006 Coffs Harbour Team Report

Software Freedom Day 2006 Coffs Harbour was a stunning success, due entirely to the fantastic team of people who devoted their time and recources. As with the previous year I committed Coffs Harbour to this event with only a vague idea that we'd have the resources to do it, and again the community came through in spades.

Cameron and I spent a couple of hours handing out flyers and CDs this afternoon, and despite appearances in these photos, we did pretty well. We distributed close to300 flyers by the time the lunchtime crowd had dispersed, and somewhere in the region of a couple of dozen CDs to those who stopped to chat.

Two more sleeps!

Software Freedom Day is nearly upon us. Tomorrow we'll be handing out CDs and flyers from 12 noon around the pedestrian mall on Harbour Drive. Please come along to help spread the word. Let me know if you can make it, so I can arrive with an appropriate amount of CDs and flyers.

The following day the fun officially starts at 10:00am at the Professional Centre, but we'll be setting up from around 8:30am. Again, any help will be greatly appreciated.

Software Freedom Day Taking Off

Seems like the claim of 140 Software Freedom Day teams worldwide, taken from a conservative estimate a month or so ago and circulated in our flyers and press releases, was a bit premature. Pia Waugh reports that it's looking more like there will be over 200 teams this year, not bad for an event in it's third year. And the country with the most teams? Pascal Klein notes that it's Australia. What is this strange and unfamiliar feeling? Could it be national pride?

New Flyer

Made an updated version of the flyer for SFD. If anybody can tell me why the transparency in David's logo doesn't work properly when "printing" to a PostScript file from Inkscape, I'd be much obliged.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Coffs Harbour will be celebrating Software Freedom Day on September 16th with a packed program of presentations to be held from 10am at the Professional Centre, 9 Park Ave.

As well as the usual technical demonstrations, special attention will be given this year to the broader social implications of technological freedom. Daniel Billing of CHATS Productions will be speaking about the use of free software in community organisations. Daniel uses free software almost exclusively in his work as a student and as a community group organiser. "Non-free software excludes; free sofware includes," he says, "That's very important for community organisations, and that accounts for the growing use of free software in this area".
